AC Milan break the San Siro Curse

Posted - 14th January 2008

AC Milan fans were smiling last night, after the club hopefully put behind a long string of home defeats/draws at the San Siro. A radically different team took to the pitch with Ronaldo and Pato dramatically toughening up the attack (at the expense of Alberto Gilardino - despite the fact that the striker has been generally in form of late).

Ronaldo opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour. Napoli, though, were far from the walk over that the final score-line might suggest (5-2), and less than ten minutes later Roberto 'el pampa' Sosa leveled. In an action packed first half Seedorf scored shortly after, and while Milan started to show their class Napoli managed to stay in the running with a penalty converted by Maurizio Domizzi (who, it has been speculated, is considering a move to Genoan club Sampdoria).

The second half had barely started when Ronaldo knocked his second in, thanks to an assist from Seedorf. The Italian press are already heralding , with good reason, the return of il Fenomeno .

The main focus of the match, though, was the performance of Ronaldo's fellow brazilian, the 18 year old Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva or Pato. Ancelloti, according to Milan vice-president Galliani, has already placed a bet on the youngster winning the 2008 Ballon d'Or, such is his enthusiasm for the player. Last night's performance was everything the Milan fans had waited for (Pato had been signed since the start of the season, but had to wait to turn 18 before playing due to Italy's sporting regulations with regard to non-EU minors). He was involved in much of the action, and sealed the impressive victory off in the 74th minute with a beautiful goal.

Patomania looks set to be the backdrop to an AC Milan comeback, ast they struggle to win points to bring them back towards the top four places in Serie A. The next big challenge will come with their Champions League match against Arsenal, where their new attack will be put fully to the test.
