Inter continue their winning streak, beating Siena

Posted - 14th January 2008

Roberto Mancini's Inter had their work cut out for them, as they started the new year against a determined Siena. The Tuscan team is lacking in stars, but makes up for it with spirit, which saw them humbling some larger clubs during the pre-christmas season(including Napoli and Milan).

The first goal of the game came from a somewhat questionable penalty, given that it seemed like a 50:50 clash between Inter's Cruz and Siena's defender Codrea. Ibrahimovic remains in good form, and easily struck home the penalty.

Siena, though, showed huge spirit and came back at the league-leaders with a vengance, with an equaliser from Maccarone (glancing off Inter's Cordoba).

Inter replied with a late first-half goal from Cambiasso, which also has the whiff of controversy. The ball was crossed in by Jiminez, missing a connection with Cruz and looked like it was going out of play, when Ibrahimovic managed to knock it back in to a waiting Cambiasso who scored. Siena boss Mario Beretta furiously claimed after the match that the goal should have been dissallowed, as the ball had been out of play.

It was, yet again, Zlatan Ibrahimovic's day - confirmed when he struck home his second goal of the match early in the second half, bringing his total this season to 11 goals (just two behind top scorer Juventus' Trezeguet).

Most teams, thus far, when faced with a two goal lead by Inter have thrown in the towel, but Siena continued to fight the whole way through the second half, and were rewarded with a goal in the final moments of extra time, when Forestieri blasted a shot home.

Few teams have scored two goals against Inter this season, and there's good argument to suggest that Siena deserved at the very least a draw here.
