Fiorentina progress towards last 16 in the UEFA Cup

Posted - 15th February 2008

Fiorentina won an important away match, last night, with a 0-1 victory against Norwegian side Rosenborg BK. Their away goal gives them a distinct advantage as they prepare for the return leg which will be played in Florence on the 21st of February. The eventual winner will go forward to the last 16 in the 2008 UEFA Cup, to play against the winner of the clash between Norwegian champions Brann and Everton.

The victory, aside from helping the team's chances in the UEFA Cup, will have had a positive effect on team morale after a number of dissapointing results in Serie A. Recently the Violas lost against AC Milan, and drew against Atalanta, losing some much needed momentum in order to maintain their fourth place in the Serie A table (guaranteeing a starting place in next season's Champions League).

Hero of the night was Romanian striker Adrian Mutu, who knocked in an easy goal after Rosenborg's goalkeeper deflected a shot from Gobbi straight into the path of Fiorentina's star striker. It was far from spectacular, but enough to seal the match. Mutu has, in thirteen matches, scored seven goals.

It's been a good week for Fiorentina, also thanks to AC Milan's midweek draw against Livorno 1-1. This was Milan's match-in-hand, which most presumed they would net three points from, allowing them to surpass Fiorentina for fourth place. Just one point separates the teams at the moment, but Milan are plagued by injury problems, and will have to focus on their upcoming Champions league fixtures - perhaps giving Fiorentina the advantage they need.Fiorentina's next game is against Catania, who are currently in thirteenth place in the table.
