Italian coach Donadoni to renew contract

Posted - 8th February 2008

Italian coach Roberto Donadoni is a couple of steps closer to being reconfirmed as Italian coach as the run-up to Euro2008 picks up pace.

The renewal of Donadoni's contract is largely a formality at this point, given that he's coming off the back of a succesful (albeit troubled) qualification campaign for the European championships, and six consecutive victories. His squad's last outing, earlier this week in a friendly against Scolari's Portugal, brought home a 3-1 victory.

Early doubts in the Italian press about Donadoni's capability for the job of filling Marcello Lippi's shoes, have largely faded at this stage. The defeats suffered in his first couple of matches a distant memory - and after all, who could forget that Marcello 'Bello' himself saw his future world champions defeated disastrously 2-0 in Iceland, during a friendly, in their first match under his tenure.

The stickling points, if any, in the renewal of Donadoni's contract, will be the inclusion of performance-related clauses in the contract with relation to the upcoming European championships this summer. Both Donadoni and Giancarlo Abete, the president of the Italian football federation (FIGC), have both downplayed speculation that these clauses could scupper the deal. Donadoni, in the wake of the victory in Zurich over Portugal, said "Abete has confirmed the intention to go forward together, and I'm pleased with that. At the right moment we'll sit down around a table, and I'll listen calmly and each party can make their own evaluation."
