Catania make it to the semi-finals for the first time
Posted - 31st January 2008
Catania faced relegation up until the last couple of matches in Serie A last year. They had their stadium closed to fans for much of the season, after riots during the Sicilian derby left a policeman dead. They had their coach suspended at the start of this year, after he very publicly kicked his opposite number on the sidelines during the Parma Catania clash. In short, they've not had a spectacular time since winning promotion into Serie A a couple of years ago.
All that was put behind them last night, as they celebrated a victory over Northern Italian club Udinese, knocking them out of the quarter-finals of the Tim cup, and qualifying for a semi-final against AS.Roma. It's their best-ever performance in the competition.
The first goal of the match, though, went to Udinese's Simone Pepe, scored in the first minute. It was an anomoly though as Catania fought to deny Udinese possession of the ball. It took the Sicilian team until the closing minutes of the first half to equalise - from a penalty taken Gionatha Spinesi. The second half saw the home team go ahead, with a goal by 'the japanese Ronaldo' Takayuki Morimoto.
So Catania go to face AS Roma (16th April and 7 May) in the Semi-finals, while the other Semi Final will be between Inter Milan and Lazio.
